Nicolas Schorer

Nicolas Schorer In 2014, Nicolas Schorer obtained his M.A. in Comparative & General Linguistics and History at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Whereas his previous research included work on Celtic and South Caucasian languages, he completed a Master's thesis on the Dura language, a Tibeto-Burman language of Nepal which recently went extinct. His aim is to complete a monograph which will not only be the most comprehensive last word in the documentation of this language, but will also provide a definitive grammar and determine the precise phylogenetic propinquity of the language within the Trans-Himalayan linguistic phylum or Tibeto-Burman language family on the basis of systematic linguistic comparison.

The Dura are a Tibeto-Burman people of roughly 6,000 residing mainly in the districts of Lamjung and Tanahu in the Gandaki zone of central Nepal. The Dura had a profound impact on the history of Nepal and the documentation and analysis of their language will be a major contribution not only to the preservation but hopefully to the revival of Dura heritage and culture.
